decent DSL combo, hassle site blocking setup, no dyndns support Mar 11, 2009
By matt.mingkee bought this one to replace Westell DSL modem (used 6 years), along with netgear wired router setup is easy, it comes with Verizon DSL settings, choose it, and get online in 10 minutes the unit runs cool, and doesn't use up much power like 2 units internet is a bit faster than previous units there's some reason I don't give 5 stars: 1. it doesn't support dynamic DDNS (dyndns, no-ip), to make it work, you must have a dedicated computer to have it running 2. kinda buggy port forwarding setup (unable to remove it if you make mistake, requires factory reset 3. no setting backup/restore options: that you have to start all over after fw upgrade or factory reset 4. site blocking doesn't have "all computers" option, that I have to setup blocking on individual computers, big hassle! (I have to put in same setting on 6 computers!!! and I have nearly 100 sites to be blocked)
update: it doesn't work with slingbox streaming over internet (firewall issue), you must purchase a separate router (wired or wireless), go to advanced, set DSL mode to RPC bridging mode, use any LAN port to router's WAN port, and setup PPPoE in the router after that, internet streaming works like charm

Perfect in every way! Sep 10, 2009

I needed a way to hook my computer and an internet tv and Skyangel into my internet connection. I tried a ethernet splitter/switch and that didn't work well at all. I looked at several routers and did not like the reviews on a lot of them. My need was for a wired connection for the best internet signal. It is probably just me but I don't trust wireless as far as security goes and I hear that there is lag and signal drops. This Actiontec modem/router was just the answer and I have to say I was just giddy when I saw such a device available at Amazon. I spent about three hours researching products on the web and came up empty on everything until I came over to Amazon.com and searched here and then jackpot!! I have ATT dsl and this modem integrates just perfectly with my ATT account. It is basically plug and play. It configures your connection for you flawlessly and there is no software that you have to download to your computer first. I had internet connection in about three or four minutes and was surfing the web. I have to say this modem seems to work more efficiently then the one that came with my ATT dsl account. And as far as the router part, it works wonderful as well. It seems to send just the right amount of internet signal to every connection as I was downloading some things to my computer and watching Skyangel at the same time without any loss of connection to either the computer or Skyangel. I am very pleased with this product and feel that I got my money's worth.

No Problems, Easy Set Up Sep 13, 2008

Recently both my modem (Speedstream) and Router (Netgear) were acting suspicious (both are about 8 years old, I am going to fix them with a hammer) so I went out and purchased this dual modem/router combination. The set up took only minutes, I plugged in all the wires turned it on and answered 3 questions and was up and running. There were no issues and it couldn't have been easier. Its running both Macs and PCs without a hitch using the built in 4 ports With the modem/router combo there is no ambiguity if there are problems on the provider side or if it's you. In my case, I believe my modem had quality control issues. I have two of the Speedstream modems and both have the same exact problems with a temperamental DSL port. I love Netgear equipment but reviews of their modem/router combo were less than stellar. I was desperate and took a chance. so far I am happy with this purchase. I can't live without internet

Speed Up Jul 15, 2009

I had a Actiontec GT-701 for about 5 years, things started to slow down on my PC and I was told some of the problem could be the modem. I also wanted to connect On Demand from Directv so I needed a router plus modem. I thought it would be best to have them as one. I tried Linksy, two different models, I played with them for hours and couldn't get the to set up even though I knew all of the answers that was needed to get them connected. What a pain in the back side! Could not get help from Linksy or Radio Shack so they went back in a flash. Since I had such good luck with Actiontec before I thought I would give them a try, and I am glad I did. I Followed the four very simple instructions on the box and it picked up my system and I was up and running in about 5 to 6 minutes. My PC is so much faster and I now have On Demand with Directv and still have two open ports on the router to expand. Great deal highly recommend, give it a try you won't be disapointed.

Great dsl modem/router! Feb 12, 2009
By hrbud This is an excellent dsl modem/router. The router has pretty much all of the standard features but one feature that stands out is the QoS capability. You can reserve a percentage of your bandwidth for high-bandwidth applications like VOIP, and the setup is based on source/destination IP/port which makes it very easy -- e.g. just assign high priority to [...] or whichever voip provider you're using and not worry about which ports are used by each protocols. The web interface is also very nicely done and intuitive-- easy to setup and learn.
The reason i gave this a 4-star instead of 5-star is because my dsl line has low SNR margin and this modem (like most others) isn't good at maintaining synchronization so it periodically disconnects whenever the signal drops. This is really too bad because the modem itself looks GREAT and the casing has plenty of ventilation so it never gets warm or hot-- unlike Netgear equipment. I'm surprised this brand has such a good build.
