Perfect portable unit for outdoor projection for VJs Aug 26, 2009
By Katrina Black

We have four of these and use them for outdoor projection in a variety of environments - eg onto buildings, landmarks, streets etc. My review is specifically in relation to that application - we don't use these for home-theatre at close range as the DLP colour-flash (rainbow effect) would be way too annoying. For outdoor "guerrilla" projection though, these are the bee's proverbial knees.
The highly functional design with the handle moulded into the body of the projector, manual sliding lens-cap and the super-fast cool down time make this the perfect unit for projection-on-the-go. The high contrast ratio and brightness are excellent when dealing with situations with some degree of ambient lighting (eg from security lights). You can see examples of actual projection using these units by searching online for VJzoo. While they are obviously not of an equivalent brightness to expensive professional projectors like Christies and Barco, they really do give out a lot of light for the price. It's sad that the model has been discontinued and that none of the newer models seem to be integrating the features that make us love our SP-820's so much - eg the handle being incorporated into the body.
