2GOOD ITEM BUT GROSSLY OVERPRICED!!!!!  Feb 25, 2009
By Rick V "Bargain hunter by day, shopaholic at night"
Be careful what you are buying here. The standard Terastation Pro II 2TB comes with 4 pre-installed Samsung Spinpoint HD501LJ drives that are mounted in removable racks/drawers. What you are looking at here is the drawer, which is proprietary to Buffalo's Terastation Live and Pro and Pro II models, and the drive mounted in there with 4 screws.

Most of us will have no need for the extra drawer since most of us run the Terastation as a RAID 5 configuration, meaning that you see it as 1 drive and not 4 separate hard drives.

You can run the Terastation as 4 separate drives and then use this to occasionally access special files you do not want on the network but frankly it means you have grossly overpaid for the solution. Running a Terastation as a simple network disk array without RAID is a waste!

Conclusion
So here is where I am torn: the drive and drawers are good items. The Samsung HD501LJ is a silent drive that lasts. The drawer fits perectly in the Terastations.
BUT: the HD501LJ costs lesst than 50 bucks online with free shipping at tie of writing this review. And when a RAID configuration has a broken disk you simply pull out the drawer that came with your Terastation in the first place, remove the 4 screws and put the new HD501LJ (or a similarly sectored drive!) in there and push it back in: the Linux OS from Teratation will rebuild the RADI image and you're back in business with all your data.

So unless you run the Terastation as a simple 4 drive array and you want to sometimeseasily swap drives this makes no sense to buy.

If one of the drawers is broken then this item, WITHOUT the extra drive makes sense. Since Buffalo does not sell it without the drive is kind of a customer unfriendly solution.

But in all cases you have grossly overpaid at the current 150+ dollar pricetag.

2 stars for the quality of the items. -3 for the usability and outrageus pricetag. Hope this helps to make a more informed decision.

1Wrong drive wrong price  Aug 28, 2009
By David Reid "big computer geek"
When I searched for this item (TS-OPHD-H3.0T) via Google, it reported that Amazon had it NEW for $69.95. When you follow the link to Amazon not only is the price wrong ($259)but it's not even the correct drive. Note that the correct drive has a carrier tray that allows you to swap the drive into the Terastation Pro II chassis. This is a bare drive. A really really overpriced bare drive at that. Run fast and run far from this Amazon item.
