Not for hi-rez widescreen monitors!!!!! Sep 16, 2009
By N. Ford I ordered this the same time as a widescreen monitor with 1920x1080 resolution without giving it too hard a look because it was being sold by D*ll as an accessory for the monitor. After installing it, the highest res it will give me is 1280x1024. (See the picture I uploaded at the top of the product page.)
I spent an hour on the phone with IOGear's tech support before noticing that the highest res it advertises on the box is 1600x1200. Not only is the res not high enough, but NONE of the resolutions it listed, down to 640x480, will work with a widescreen display (not without stretching/distorting the video, anyway).
Why D*ll would sell a video adapter with a monitor it doesn't support is beyond me. Why IOGear would produce a video adapter with the latest video adapter (DVI) and no widescreen support and no hi-res support is beyond me. [Update: When I pointed this out to D*ll, they allowed me to return it and sent a UPS label so that I didn't have to pay return postage. Also, D*ll charged 50% more than Amazon for the same product.]
BTW, neither of the above limitations is indicated on the Amazon product page.
Edit:
I decided to order this from Amazon to use with an old 4:3 (1280x1024) monitor. When that monitor died, I replaced it with a 16:9 and just put text on the screen so that the stretching didn't matter much, then in early 2010, DisplayLink, who makes the driver, came out with an update to the driver which supports higher resolutions, though not as high as the typical 16:9 monitor. Still, the stretching is less, although I still stick to text on that monitor.
On Oct.15,2010, DisplayLink's software automatically installed the latest driver and the max res is still 1680x1050 (which is not 16:9) even though IOGEAR's web site claims that the highest res for this adapter is 1920x1080.

Thankyou! Aug 29, 2008

I am a software developer and I work from a laptop nowadays. I need the portability. What I always missed about having a desktop setup was having 2 or 3 monitors. Well, I was skeptical about this product, but bought it anyways, and now I couldn't be happier. Although, it's not very good with video applications or anywhere that needs graphics acceleration. That's ok tho, I have a main monitor which handles that stuff just fine.

Good for adding a third monitor to laptop. Oct 16, 2008
By Benjamin Hoffman Works pretty well, nice for adding additional desktop space beyond what is supported by your video card. I was not able to play video on the extra monitor and the refresh is a little finicky, but if you are just editing documents (need another instance of Visual Studio open or whatever) or want your email up - it's fine. I have had issues with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications correctly rendering on the extra monitor.

Works great with Windows 7 & Lenovo tablet Feb 11, 2010
By Dawn I needed two external, wide-screen monitors to attach to my Lenovo X60 tablet (which doesn't have a DVI input slot#. I have been using a Matrox Dual Head to Go, but the maximum resolution I could get to was 1024X 768 on each monitor - such a waste of real estate - not to mention the crappy quality! I purchased the IOGear External DVI to USB video card and was able to connect the DVI cable from one of my monitors to one of my USB slots on my docking station and the VGA cable from the other into the docking station and it worked perfectly first time. I did have to download the latest drivers from the IOGear website before it would install on Windows 7. When I attempted to install the software from the CD that came in the box it said it wouldn't load on this operating system version.
The monitor #they are identical models)that is connected through the IOGear adapter is actually crisper and sharper than the one attached via VGA. Screen resolution is 1680 X 1050 - a vast improvement over the 1024 X 768 that I was limited to using Matrox adapter.
I was able to successfully undock and redock my laptop - the screens came back in the same configuration as before I undocked (the primary display in the middle on the monitor connected to the IOGear - my tablet's monitor on the left and the VGA connected monitor on the right). That way I can drag a window in either direction off my primary display. I'm using in an office setting, so don't know how it would perform if I was trying to do any gaming, but I'm happy so far! I would have given this 5 stars, but since I haven't used it very long, I'm not sure how the long term performance/quality will be and would hate to give out 5 stars just to find out it stopped working in 15 days. But so far, very pleased.

Good for small screen but not for larger one Apr 03, 2010
By Chu Chu The product is good. You can easily install it without any difficulty. By default, the driver can be downloaded from windows update, so that all you have to do is "plug and play". I love this product, because I can use 3 monitor in the same time (1 built-in monitor, 1 external, and this product). It works. However, here are some complaints: (1) Although it support 1600 * 1200, most modern 24" screen ask for higher resolution. So don't buy it for 1920*1200 resolution. (2) Even in 1600*1200 resolution, the performance is VERY VERY low. I can see my mouse pointer jump between every moves. However, the problem can be solved if you lower you resolution or change it from 32bit to 16 bit color.
I guess either the chip in this product is not good enough, or the limitation of the USB speed. Anyway, it's a great product, but it's not a suitable product for large screen. Keep it in your mind. If you want to use it for a projector, you will be fine. Most project run at 1024*768 resolution.
