4item is as advertised  Jan 22, 2008
By Dave M
I'm an IT consultant who sometimes has to do some phone work. I bought this to do tracing from closet to closet - like you're in the basement trying to find the block that extends up to the phone closet on your floor or finding where an unlabeled phone jack is on the 66 block is in the closet. It's not quite as nice as what I see the Verizon techs using - it has large alligator clips and the device the produces the tone doesn't seem to be as powerful as what the Verizon techs have, but it does the job.

It's also an RJ-45 cable tester. You can take an RJ-45 cable and plug one end into each device in this package and it will tell you if the cable is good or not. I found a use for this too when I found a bad cable.

5Does what is suppose to do.  Mar 19, 2012

I can't review much. But I used this tool for a few hours for multiple cable drops. This tester help me tester all cable and a cable that didnt work. The tester found the problem. It supports both RJ45/RJ11 terminals for regular phone lines if you installing any. I upgraded to more expensive equipment as work provided us with new gear.

4It does the job  Dec 30, 2011
By D. E. Bedwell
I got this for wiring projects around the house. The toner works fine, and the cable tester is handy. The toner isn't particularly strong- you can't trace through walls, for example- but I have had no problem tracing cat5 or alarm cables back to the source with it. I'd recommend for the DIY weekend warrior.

1Junk...  Jul 07, 2011

Cable testing is okay, but I bought this thing for Tone/Probe. Let's just say it doesn't do the job well at all. Not once have I been able to tone a CAT5 with this device, even after making sure the batteries were fresh. Very disappointed.

1Garbage  May 07, 2011

We bought these to help us troubleshoot our network in Iraq for the military.

The tone is so weak it is practically non-existent. It is virtually impossible to even trace a 5 foot line, that's how weak the signal is.

I know it's not because we have a bad one, because we purchased 10 of these, and all of them are terrible. Paladin has become a brand that has lost it's luster. Will never purchase Paladin brand anything anymore.
