HP LP2480zx DreamColor Monitor May 09, 2010
By S. R. Sanborn
"PhotoGuy"
Pros: This is a beautiful monitor. I'm a nature photographer and work almost exclusively in Adobe RGB. This monitors built in profile is a real plus. In addition, the LED backlighting and IPS panel make for wonderful viewing for photo editing My previous monitor was an HP LP2465 which my wife is now using and loves. I did not compare the LP2480zx with other high end monitors before purchasing so I won't comment in that regard. I picked this monitor based on HP's usually good quality products and my experience with the LP2465. The LP2480zx monitor is easy to setup with multiple video connection options.
Cons: Not sure what usefulness the display assistant software is so after some experimentation I have stopped loading it. HP's manual doesn't provide much information other than setup and connection diagrams. I could have figured that stuff out without the manual. This monitor can only be profiled using the DreamColor Advanced Profiling Solution (APS# so add an additional $350 to the price tag. I already owned X-Rite's EZColor but the monitor OSD doesn't provide individual adjustments for color, contrast, and brightness in a way that worked with EZColor. I purchased the APS package but the software wouldn't load using Windows 7 64bit. Once you get the APS to work it's easy to update through the application. However, X-Rite doesn't list the HP APS on their site even though the software and colorimeter are made by them. After a long Google search I found a link to an update at X-Rite. After installing the update, I couldn't profile the monitor because I kept getting a message that the USB hub wasn't connected even though it was and it functioned. At the time I was using an Nvidia based 1GB, GT 240 graphics card connected through the HDMI port. On a guess, I switched the connection to the DVI ports and the APS software recognized the USB connection and I was able to profile the monitor. Apparently there is a conflict with at least some Nvidia cards connected through the HDMI port. For a short time I connected the LP2480zx to an ATI HD 5750 graphics card using the display port. The monitor worked well and I was able to profile it. However, that card was defective #another long story) so I went back to my trusty ATI HD 2600. Once I got the APS to work, it was easy to use and made a slight improvement in the accuracy of the display. More importantly, now I can maintain color accuracy by periodically re-profiling.
HP has very little information on their site regarding support for this monitor and its profiling kit. I admit I went through a lot of struggles and frustration to get the monitor profiled but now I'm very pleased with it. Hopefully this information will assist others who are interested in purchasing the LP2480zx. My review is not meant to discourage.
My System: ASUS P5K3-delux, Windows 7 64bit, 8GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Quad Core processor.

Excellent Product Aug 21, 2009
By Andrew M. Clark This is by far the best computer monitor out there currently that can also double as just a monitor for all your video/photo/animation needs. Is it the best in all those categories? Maybe...maybe not. For me, for now....it definitely is. It all depends on how the end user configures the monitor; as it seems endlessly configurable!! The presets help if you don't want to spend time tweaking it to your perfection. And if you do wish to tweak it, a much recommended accessory is the calibration kit designed especially for this monitor (HP Dreamcolor Advanced Profiling Solution KZ300AA).
This monitor does cost [...], but...in my opinion...you definitely get what you pay for and won't be disappointed.
Very well built (yes, built / assembled in China). Great monitor stand; very easy to move up, down, swivel and yes....with the (Windows only) software...you can rotate it to Portrait mode. You'll need a sturdy desk to support this monitor. It weighs a bit more than other 24" monitors.
Read the online PDF manuals before you buy to understand how this monitor works and what it is capable (and not capable) of.
I have it connected to a 2009 MacPro Oct-core; w/the ATI4870HD card; connected via the Mini-DisplayPort. (Note on that...if you do run it with a computer that has Mini-DisplayPort, you'll need to purchase a Mini-DP to Fullsize DP cable). You can try to find it here on Amazon or at Circuit Assembly is where I found mine. Works great; no problems. I bounce back and forth between Mac OSX (10.6.1) and (via Bootcamp of course) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (beta of course) all with no problems. I even have a second monitor hooked up, via the DVI port in the ATI card, in conjunction with this DreamColor monitor...and it works flawlessly. This is where you will REALLY notice the quality difference.
The monitor also has HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component, Composite, S-Video and USB input ports. And yes, they even include the cables!! (But not the Mini-DP cable I mentioned above.)
Hey, if it's good enough for the crew at DreamWorks...
A definite BUY recommendation...that is, if you can afford it.
Stellar monitor! Jan 28, 2012
By Nathan Hale I've been using this monitor for the past week, it truly is a wonderful monitor. Bright, crisp, rich color (makes my CINTIQ monitor look dim and yellow when used side by side.)
I had a lot of trouble getting this monitor to work with my Power Mac tower (quad-core Intel Xeon.) The monitor would claim "No Input Signal" and go to sleep whenever it was attached. I was using a DVI to VGA adapter cable. The problem was solved with Amazon's own HDMI to DVI cable AmazonBasics HDMI to DVI Adapter Cable (9.8 Feet/3.0 Meters) It was up and running perfectly with this $8 cable.
The monitor is self-cooled, so it does have a quiet fan that kicks on every so often. It is also very heavy. But the image/color quality is wonderful.
