Better than expected. Jun 26, 2009
By Kate Stokes I expected this drive to work, of course, but I did not expect it to be so quiet. It has been my experience that Seagate drives are the most robust and dependable, but the reliability has typically come at the expense of noise levels higher than that of comparable drives. As an owner of the 500GB WD Blue 2.5" drive (which is quieter than a whisper) I didn't expect this drive to be as quiet but I decided to give it a shot anyway because I needed one in a pinch and couldn't get another WD model on such short notice. To my surprise, this drive is just as quiet as the WD model. Seagate has apparently made great strides in this department. It is my understanding that the WD model consumes slightly less energy than this drive does, but we are not talking about a large difference and I do trust Seagate reliability more than WD at the end of the day. So, in summation this seems to be a great 500GB 2.5" drive. If something changes down the road I will return and amend my review as I always do when new information arises.

Works as expected. Nov 11, 2009
By Technophile When I was looking for a replacement drive for my 120GB PS3 Slim, I knew I wanted to upgrade to a 7200rpm drive. After learning that the PS3 could only fit standard laptop 2.5" drives (not the server drives), I ended up choosing the Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200 for it's capacity, speed and brand name. I bought the drive and installed it per Sony's instructions, turned it on and it worked as expected. Game installs, patches, downloads are noticeably quicker (~20-30%) but I think the PS3's SATA1 interface is limiting the performance potential of this drive. Regardless, after about 200hrs of use I've had no problems with this drive. As a bonus, It's also very quiet (the PS3 system fan and DVD drive are louder). Overall a good purchase for any laptop or PS3 system.

Great drive Nov 04, 2009
By K. Hutchison Had this for about six months now, it is in my primary work laptop so it is on 8+ hrs a day, my laptop has a cooler, and I monitor drive temp so I have not thermally stressed the drive, although I did drop it once when it was on, and it continued to work fine).
This drive was an upgrade from a 250Gb 5400RPM WD, the speed increase was dramatic (I believe this is due to increased data density not RPM). It also uses less power than its 250Gb predecessor.
I also bought the 5400 RPM version of this drive and used it as my main drive (for about a week) before switching to the 7200 RPM version here. Frankly I didn't notice much difference between the 5400 RPM and the 7200 RPM versions, performance, power, noise are all about the same. The dramatic performance increase came from the size upgrade from 250Gb to 500Gb.

Good little drive. No complaints after two years. Mar 17, 2010

"Slacker"
I bought this drive to use with a OWC Mercury On-The-Go Portable 2.5" FW800/USB2.0 Enclosure Kit in order to have a bus-powered external drive for my MacBook Pro, both as supplemental storage and as an emergency boot drive. It's performed both functions well for nearly two years now. It's very quiet and fast enough to serve up video content at HD resolutions. It can run a little warm in an external case without forced convection, but this isn't a problem in most circumstances.
