Bit loud but it does the job Nov 19, 2010

Way too loud Nov 22, 2009
By Griffster Although it is functional, the unit I received is way too loud. I wish I was kidding when I compare it to a salon hair dryer. It makes more noise than the entire rest of the PC. I bought it to provide some additional flow-through air for my case (not as a hard drive cooler specifically), and I couldn't live with it as loud as it was.
I wired in a potentiometer to adjust the voltage to the fan trio, hoping to dull the noise, and it only changed the pitch, not really the volume. I also disconnected the fans one by one and discovered that 2 of the 3 were significantly louder than the other. I now am running just 1 fan in the group of 3. I made the decision to keep and rewire the unit rather than send it back for a refund at this price point. My CPU temps, which were of the utmost concern, may have been reduced by 1-2 deg C. when all 3 fans were working. I know my power supply is getting more cool air, however.

Unstable and uninstallable Mar 02, 2009
By Snap, Crackle and Pop There are no instructions, but even if there were it would only fit some cases. It's bigger than most standard drive bay accessories, and the front cover is curved. (They really missed the boat not making the filter cover smaller, so it would fit more cases.)
Even if you can get it installed, the Startech FanDrive series isn't stable enough to really support a drive in a 5.25" bay, so your drive may vibrate - unpleasant and maybe unsafe for the drive. Rather than making it two pieces, they really should have made this one piece so there would be more support for the drive. (Though the bracket is so cheap it might not have helped much.)
By the way, the filter cover slides off, something I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere - see the image in the gallery for this product. If you're desperate to get it installed in your case, or want to cut it down to fit, that may help.
Other options to consider, depending on whether you want a fan or just a bracket; and whether you want to be able to remove the drive easily.

Broke before installation. Mar 21, 2012
By Kid@heart Nothing like having your new toy break before you even get a chance to install it. The front panel is made to slide up and then out, enabling you to remove it for cleaning the filter. On each end of the filter plate are two L shaped thin plastic hooks (where the bottom of the L gets inserted at the top of the unit where the hole is bigger) and slides down where the hole is smaller, locking it into place. The first time trying to slide the face plate upward with very little pressure, and the L hook on one side broke off. You can't even glue it back on it's so thin. this is a very cheaply made filter cover that it makes me wonder how many people have already broken theirs?
As for the main unit itself. The product lists the noise level at 38dB. But they seem a lot quieter than that. (which is a good thing). There are three fans. Each having four holes to insert screws to mount them. however, only two screws are used to mount each fan. How cheap can a company be??? Really? They couldn't afford to put the other 6 screws in? really? Not that these small fans need all four screws in each fan but it goes to show the quality is very poor.
I taped the filter on so that I could still use it, but it doesn't pull enough air through to lower the temperature reading on my drives.
Because I knew the size of the fans were small when I purchased it and I knew there would be a possibility that it wouldn't pull much air, even though listed at 25 CFM, I didn't ding it for lack of air flow, but I dinged it three stars for the cheaply made face plate. For being a Startech product, I am really surprised at the poor quality of this front panel fan. Startech should be embarrassed for selling a cheaply made product!
If you purchase this fan unit, be very careful when removing face plate.
Great way to increase airflow Jan 19, 2012
By William Spillman I have an old, large case which only mounts 80mm fans. I live in a dusty place and have several cats, so I have my case set up for positive-pressure with filtered intake fans to prevent dust buildup, with 5 filtered intake fans and 2 exhaust fans. When I upgraded my video card, the overall temperature in my case went up by 5-10 degrees C, which made my CPU and GPU both run a little hotter than I wanted. This item let me reverse one of my intake fans while still maintaining positive pressure, effectively increasing airflow in my case by 50% and dropping temps 2 degrees C lower than they were before I upgraded my video card.
My only complaint is that the filter is not as tight as I'd like. It will catch cat hair, but fine dust and dander will slip through it. Since mine is behind a drive bay door with vents which are already filtered, this isn't problem for me, but it's enough to keep it from getting a full 5-star rating.
