Wow -- Does Exactly What it Promises Aug 03, 2009
By Aaron Morris I use six monitors with my Windows XP computer. The set-up is complicated by the fact that two of the 22" monitors are used in vertical mode for word processing and web pages. (Once you've experienced being able to see an entire web page at a glance you'll never go back.) For reasons that I still don't understand, a Windows update killed one of the six monitors, and the only way to get it back was to roll back the Windows update. I wondered if this USB to VGA adapter might circumvent the problem and bring back my sixth monitor.
It worked beautifully. I installed the drivers from the CD, plugged in the adapter, rebooted, and it worked. Windows sees it like any other video card, and you arrange the placement of the monitors through Windows display properties. I'm back to six monitors.
Since the video is running through USB and not a "real" video adapter, you should not expect that it will be as fast. When I dragged something onto the screen, I sensed some jerkiness. However, just as a test, I opened YouTube and ran a video. I was surprised at how well it ran, with only occasional hesitation. You shouldn't buy this adapter if you have a need for fast video, but for everyday applications it does a great job. I did not try the adapter with my vertical monitors so I don't know if it has that capability.

Exactly What I Needed Jun 11, 2009
By Webmaam
"Web Designer"
My new monitor is a 21" Dell. I am a web designer and had to turn on a second computer to be sure that the web page displayed correctly on a smaller monitor. I re purposed my second computer (hooked it up to my TV to watch free movies) and was no longer able to check the site on a smaller monitor, that is until I purchased this USB 2.0 to VGA Display Adapter. It installed easily and is perfect for my needs. It EXTENDS my main monitor and I can open a new window or application and just drag it across the screen to the smaller monitor with the correct resolution. FANTASTIC!! A plus was ordering it on 6/9 and receiving it on 6/11 with the free shipping.

Doesn't seem to work with Vista, and tech support non-existent. Sep 28, 2009
By J. Barrington I have a laptop with Windows Vista installed, and I purchased the Aluratek VGA Display Adapter so that I could hook-up, or unhook, a monitor from my laptop without shutting down the laptop. I also chose the unit because of the high marks that received here at Amazon.
I received the unit and followed the instructions for installing the related software (and driver information), but the software would not fully install and would halt. I tried several different ways to install the software, but I still didn't have any success. The various different ways involved stopping all firewall, anti-virus, and malware software. Since I tried to install the software from the accompanied CD, I decided to go to the Aluratek site and downloaded a fresh copy even though it was the same version number. It still would not install properly.
I decided that it was time to contact the manufacturer for support help, and I sent them a detailed email stating that I was having difficulties with the software. They replied with an email with general instructions on how to install the software and hardware. I had to reply back stating again that my problem was with trying to get the installation software to work, and that I hadn't even been able to reach the stage of actually connect the hardware. I never received a reply. I even wrote to them several more times and never received a reply back.
I haven't tried the software installation on any of my other computers which have Windows XP installed onto them, so this could be only an issue related to Vista, or it could be strictly related to a problem with the version of the installation software. Those other computers of mine with XP installed are desktops and not a laptop like the one that I have with Vista. I also see that the other reviewers for this product appear to have XP as the OS system.
I am giving this product a low score for several reasons. The first was that it states that it works with Vista. It doesn't with my computer. The second reason, although the tech support replied one time with general help, they refuse to reply any further for some reason with more detailed help, so I feel that their tech support is of no value. If I can't get the software and driver to install and operate the device, then I consider the device not working as described. Perhaps they will release another driver installation package in the future, and I'll be able to use this unit. If this ever occurs, I will amend my review.
I am glad that others were able to get the unit working, but I wanted to take a moment to share my negative experiences with the product, so that it might help another person decide if they really want to take a chance with purchasing it.

Wonderful Mar 03, 2009
By Antonio Fernandez It took less than 5 minutes to install and start using it! Amazing! The display looks fine and the software was easy to configure my set-up. With this gadget I can use my IBM ThinkPad T60p with Windows XP with two 1680x1050 monitors!
Worth the Money Jan 11, 2012
By Randy Warner I run a virtual school and just "graduated" to dual monitors! How awesome! Installation (CD) was fast on Win 7 Pro and it instantly recognized the second monitor. I was getting driver crashes frequently and then found out the video drivers on my computer were 2 yrs old. A visit the HP site to update the video drivers and no more crashes. Like you'll read in another review, it's USB so won't be quite as fast as your main monitor. But for keeping your email or a directory open all the time, it works like a charm. And to open apps, browsers, directories, windows, and be able to drag them back and forth where you want them... priceless. Also was $20 cheaper on Amazon than at my local computer store. Bought one for my secretary and made her happy too.
