Easy to switch between 5.1 channel and PC speaker Jul 12, 2010
By C. Wang Intel P4 3.4Ghz / Windows XP Pro / Onkyo 5.1 reciever / Monitor built-in Stereo Speaker
Very easy to install and digital sound quality is great. Easy to switch out put between regular PC speaker and 5.1 channel receiver by just plug/unplug digital cable and regular analogue cable to this device. The built in Karaoke function is wonderful too.

Just what I needed! Dec 24, 2010
By Tome Worm There seems to be few reviews with incorrect information that almost threw me off from getting this so I would like to add my bit of information here.
My requirement: I have a 7.1 sound setup with multiple sources connecting to my receiver which drives the speaker setup. I added a PC (small form factor that uses nVidia ION chipset) to the setup and found out that the PC didn't have a optical output. Therefore, it was not possible to get true DTS/Dolby decoding done at my receiver. So I was looking for an external sound card with optical out that will output the undecided audio stream for the receiver.
Based on my requirement, this product seemed like a good fit , but few reviews indicated that the optical out was not PCM audio stream etc in spite of the product spec saying that it is. I ended up buying it to check it out myself.
Installation and Setup: Very simple. Just plug and play and the system (running Vista) detected it without any problem and used default audio drivers to generate a 2.0 headphone output. But once the supplied drivers are installed, the output can be changed to PCM out (undecoded) via the optical out port. This is perfect to be fed via optical cable into the DTS/Dolby capable receivers which can then decode 7.1 sound.
So all in all, the product works well and does its job.

Works Great Sep 15, 2009

Installed this on a desktop computer that I downgraded to XP and on a notebook upgraded to Vista. Both times it worked wonderfully, so good in fact that the temp fix on the desktop became a permanent fix.

Wonderful! Apr 28, 2009
By Brad B I am using a cheapo Dell for a media center on my TV. I wanted optical out and didn't want to spend the cash for a low profile PCI card. This little guy did the trick perfectly. Optical out to my receiver - perfect. There is a LED on it that made my receiver stack glow - so I put a bit of tape over that. Otherwise, I have no complaints. As with anything, download the latest drivers first and you will be happier.
A good solution for me Feb 23, 2012
By jBj Seems like the computing hardware add-ons are getting simpler and simpler.
I found this little doodad to be extremely easy to use, truly plug and play on win server 2003 64 bit and Win7 64 bit.
I wish I knew what the actual max digital output rate is (16bit@44khz I'm guessing), this device works well enough not to worry about the numbers however. Chose not to install the included Xear software because I don't need the 7.1 sound. I was just after a simple optical out for writing .wav audio to an old Mini-disc player.
Bottom line: Inexpensive Great output level Plug and hear Super convenient
