5Keeps cool  Aug 21, 2006
By Timothy Brothers
I use the external hard drive at work to keep a backup of my data and store large files that will not fit on my computers smaller and much fuller drive. So I leave the external hard drive on 24/7. I had another case with a built in fan, but it got too hot and stopped working. This case stays very cool and works great. I was so happy with mine I bought another one for my wife.

4Fulfilled the need and then some!  May 22, 2006
By Michael MegeGeek "Computer Geek in the Land of Flint"
When it comes down to it, what can be wrong with am enclosure... it either works or it doesn't.. everything else is either aesthetic or features. The NexStar performs flawlessly and is a snap to use transferring large files pretty quickly. The only complaint I have about installing the drive is that not only is it a tight fit to get the drive in there, but it was somewhat of a pain to position the IDE cable in such a way as to not get severely pinched when closing the cover.

This is the second drive enclosure that I have purchased over the past year. The first one was a cheaper alternative to the NexStar 3.0 and although this enclosure is a beauty (I specifically bought the black to match my computer case), it is lacking a few things that the alternative has at a lower price. Firewire support is not there (though I can't truly complain since I knew that when purchasing it) and the ability to chain enclosures together would have been welcome.

I can't really give it five stars but it really doesn't deserve four either... I'd say it is more like a 4.5 :)

5Possibly the best external enclosure available  May 02, 2006
By P. Fine
I did a lot of research before I decided to purchase the Nexstar3 and I am very pleased with my decision. Drive installation is a snap and the fit and finish of the enclosure is excellent. I am running a 7200 RPM, 300GB Seagate with a 16MB cache and heat is not a problem despite the lack of a fan. Even after using the drive for whole days involving numerous high volume file transfers, the enclosure is merely warm to the touch. The aluminum disipates heat very effectively! The case is slim and portable so can be slipped into any bag for transport. The Nexstar 3 is a winner!

4A great case that works.  Jan 06, 2006
By dopeywilliams
I spent several weeks researching this topic before I purchased. I also spent quite a bit of time in reading the customer reviews on Amazon.com. What I was finding with a lot of these enclosures, is that most of them did not work (according to customer reviews). I was just about ready to say "forget it", when I stumbled upon the Nexstar 3. I read the review, and decided to fork out the cash.

I have to say that this product lived up to my expectations. Installing an IDE disk was a straight-forward process, and it only took about ten minutes. One of my complaints, is that the case is a tight fit, and the screw mounts don't look to be sturdy. Also, the screws for the outside of the case had difficulty with being tightened. Other than that, installation was a snap.

Put it on your Windows XP equipped system, turn on the power, and voila! You're up and running in seconds. USB 2.0 provides speedy transfers, and everything seems to work. The package also comes with drivers for Win 98 on CD, although I do not know if they work, as I do not have this operating system on any of my computers.

The large blue LED light is a bit scary looking, and is bright enough to light up a room. The emblazoned Vantek emblem is nifty, but makes for a blinding experience if you happen to look directly at it.

In short, I will say that there are a few basic design flaws, but they are acceptable. The product works as advertised, and for the price, you really can't ask for more. If you're in dire need of an external enclosure, or are just looking to expand your storage capability, then I would highly recommend this product.

3Good item but not without flaws  Aug 05, 2009
By Andrey
I own two of these enclosures, the red one I bought at least 2 years ago and the black one just recently. They are sleek looking and work really well - when they work.

The red enclosure stopped working after a year; it turned out that one of the legs of the power connector separated from the board, without even unplugging the enclosure that often - easy fix if you have a soldering iron.
The black enclosure comes with a new, more compact and more powerful power adapter, but all of a sudden after working fine for a week it will randomly not provide enough power to spin up my 500Gb hard drive. I swapped the power adapters between the two enclosures and all is well now.. bizarre.

These are nice cases for the money, they dissipate heat well, they look cool, but they are not very well made. The power plug is hard to insert/remove, the aluminum bracket that holds the drive is hard to slide into the enclosure, the back side of the bracket (with the power/usb plugs) bends too much when you push on it, on my new enclosure I have to force the hard drive into the aluminum bracket because it's a bit too tight on the sides...

Almost good enough for the money; I'd pay $20 tops for this case if I had to buy it again.
