5Great product for the price  Nov 19, 2011
By Pacific101
I was tired of writing checks to the local telephone company and decided to venture out into VoiP services and see if I could save a few dollars. I researched for a couple of days and decided on a course of action. I found a service provider that outlined what appeared to be a pretty good price line for VoiP services, a company called Callentric. I then looked at the various VoiP modems that they recommended and that they supported. One by one I went down the list, looking 1st at cost and then at reviews, without exception the Zoom 5801 received the best overall ratings and was priced in a range that didn't choke my pocket book to death. So I ordered up 6 of them, thinking that would be enough to setup up myself and two family members who were going to jump ship on the local telephone company.I bought 2 for each of us because I figured without the phone company to help us out in the event of hardware failure it would be smart to have a second modem ready and able to take the place of the 1st one if one of them should ever go kapooie.well.
That was over two years ago as I write this review and I have nothing but praise for these modems, they have performed flawlessly. So far 3 extra backup modems that I bought have just been setting in closets collecting dust waiting for the day that they might be brought out and put into service. In the meantime my highest monthly phone bill since the transition over to VoiP has been $17.45, and that was a real exception, my regular phone bill is $12.00 or less a month verses the near $60.00 a month I used to give the phone company. I would and do recommend the Zoom 5801 VoiP modem to anyone considering going over to a VoiP setup. I would of course check and find out that if it will work with whatever system your going with. On a final note Callcentric has been fantastic and their rates are very competitive with the others out there, they offer a variety of account types and terms to fit your specific needs and their support team is second to none. I guess I could review and recommend them too lol. All and all the transistion to VoiP has been a very positive one, Zoom modems and Callentric have put my old money grubbing phone company to shame.

2Be Warned! Not a true FXS/FXO device  Nov 21, 2007
By Dennis D
If you plan to use this with Asterisk, be warned. You CANNOT use this device as true independent FXS and FXO devices like you can the Linksys SPA3102. If you want to use it as a FXO (PSTN) device only, you can, but you MUST make it ANSWER the incoming call and hotline dial it to send it anywhere. If you are planning on using this with a software PBX like Asterisk, I recommend you see if you can find a good working example somewhere before you buy it. If you want to use it as a stand alone device to route 911 (and/or local) calls to a PSTN line and have it connect to a VoIP provider to save money, it will work great. If you want to use it to provide you with a FXS port and a FXO port and you'll handle the SIP traffic yourself with something like Asterisk, don't buy it.

5A very handy device  Nov 17, 2007
By Leonardo Valencia
The zoom ATA 5801 is a great device. It does what is designed to do with exceptional simplicity, in particular when used with the Global Village VoIP service.

It can't get simpler than going to Global Village's website, registering the MAC address and then turning the device on. Everything gets configured automatically.

To be used with other service providers, the ATA can be configured through its web based management software. The range of options is staggering. You can control even the most arcane of parameters.

My only problem during the installation was that inability to receive sound at all. The upstream connection was working great, the only problem was getting data into the device, which pointed up to some NAT configuration trouble. However it was just a matter of enabling the STUN protocol and selecting an STUN server (there are many public ones, like stun.xnet.com). After doing that everything works great.

I strongly recommend this product if you are looking for a versatile VoIP ATA

2Didn't work for me  Mar 24, 2008
By R. Alves
Bought this unit because it was one of the only (cheap) ones that support multiple VoIP accounts. Not that I use multiple providers now, but I wanted that capability for future use. So my first objective was to make it work with my existing provider (Broadvoice).
The device was configured using the provider's configuration information, which are basically 5 settings you need to change, and didn't work. The interface allows you to change hundreds of parameters, and the manuals don't help at all. After a couple days trying, I contacted Zoom support who is still supposedly working on the issue. They claim they used two units to try and replicate the problem. One works perfectly, the other has the same problems as the one I received.
After three weeks of exchanging useless e-mails with support, I returned it.
This product has a lot of potential, and I'm sure it works for a lot of people, but it didn't work for me so hence my two stars.

5The best ATA for the money  Feb 03, 2008
By M. Mazzucco
People don't seem to realize that this is the best ATA for the money one can buy. 2 reasons:

1) One can be registered up to 4 VOIP accounts concurrently!
2) One can use one phone for both PSTN and VOIP calls

As far as I know, no other ATA offers this, and at this price, there really is no competition
